Your local Community College is the key

Your local high school may not tell you, but you can start your teen at your local community college at 16 years of age, without a high school diploma.

I think the biggest key to success is that they pick the class, any one class that they are excited about.
There will be plenty of time and ways to complete the core requirements. Forget declaring a major and visions of a cap and gown, just go for a teen who is actively engaged in learning - even if it starts with one class and a lot of free time.

We knew this to be true from conversations with our local high school and many friends and neighbors who found our local high school just could not meet the needs of their kids.

Call your local community college and ask for info on programs for teens.  You may be surprised with your options.

For us, it was Sussex County Community College in northwest, New Jersey.  It's a small school on a beautiful campus in rural/suburban Newton, NJ.

The Jump Start program opened the doors to high education for Ms M.  And it was easier and more accomodating than we expected.
